Eu Supports Minsk Group Co-chairs' Efforts Towards Karabakh Conflict Settlement, Says Commissioner

The European Union supports efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs towards the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement NegotiationsJohannes Hahn said addressing a meeting with participants of a press tour organized as part of the Eastern Partnership Summit, an APA correspondent reported from Brussels.

'I think that the recent meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents in Geneva, as well the last meeting between the two countries' foreign ministers is a positive sign. We support all efforts in this regard,' he said.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict entered its modern phase when the Armenian SRR made territorial claims against the Azerbaijani SSR in 1988.

A fierce war broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. As a result of the war, Armenian armed forces occupied some 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory which includes Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts (Lachin, Kalbajar, Aghdam, Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Gubadli and Zangilan), and over a million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced people.
